How to Embrace Color and Brighten Your Wardrobe

Never in a million years did I think I could style any color outside of blacks, whites and neutrals.  My closet was mundane and I would always reach for the safe colors when putting together an outfit. Colors that didn't draw too much attention and allowed me to blend in were my favorites . As trends began to evolve, I challenged myself to have more fun with color. I looked myself in the mirror and said, "Self, you're gonna wear this mustard yellow dress and you're gonna wear it well." I even started swapping my plain and boring accessories like earrings for fun and colorful ones. Embracing color is not as easy as one may think. After all, the thought of an outfit  that didn't incorporate black actually frightened me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash wearing black. I will always stan for a nice all black number. The colors we wear the most are often a reflection of our moods. Sometimes wearing a bright color can invite positive vibes into your life instantly. If you've never experimented with bold colors in your wardrobe nor have you stepped out of your black and white comfort zone, here's some tips to help you get started:

Take Inventory & Let it Go

Take inventory of your closet. What's the dominate color? Is it black? Is it neutrals? Don't wait until summer arrives. Why not a royal blue sweater in the winter time? Or a red turtle neck? Challenge yourself to find basic pieces in a color you don't have. Start small - replace the over worn black blouse with one in a color  you've never worn before. If you'd like to do some spring cleaning, start by gathering the clothes in colors you feel "safe" in and give them away or pack them up in your garage.

Make it Monochrome

The meaning of Monochrome as a fashion reference is basically an outfit of one color or color scheme. A monochromatic outfit stands out easily especially in a bold color. Do you already have a red skirt and a red blouse you've never thought of pairing together? Try it and throw on pair of red pumps as well. Boom. Now you have a monochrome fit in seconds.

Get Inspired

Every year there are new style trends to know. Some trends are timeless while others don't last for more than a season. Keeping up with trends can be exhausting but it doesn't hurt to blend the ones that are here to stay with your personal style. Get inspired by your favorite style blogger or fashion designer you feel emulates your style the most. If you like how they style bold bright colors, use that as a source of inspiration and make it your own. One of my favorite stylish bloggers is @SimplyCyn because she embraces color effortlessly as she travels the world.

Choose Confidence Over Fear

Change can be scary but don't let fear hold you back from embracing color! I used to think that because of my deep skin tone, I was limited to wearing only certain colors. It wasn't until I challenged myself to wear more bold colors, I truly learned I can rock whatever color I like and so can you. Don't limit yourself. Break barriers and brighten up every room you walk in to starting with your wardrobe. Apply these tips to your professional wear too. Try wearing light pink, coral, royal blue, lavender or emerald green. Regardless of your size, color, age or gender - bold colors are for you!
